Description:

FutureScape is a two-day corporate team immersion into the future.  Through the examination of key trends, driving forces, and the leading edge activity in the venture capital market, corporate teams will identify their strategic frontiers for new business development.

Background:

It is a challenge for corporations to identify exciting new growth opportunities for the future.  Traditional strategic planning processes are often focused on the near-term and there is typically no internal function dedicated to marketplace foresight, exploring what the markets could look like in the 3-5 year timeframe. 

The FutureScape Program is designed to help corporate teams gain that foresight.  They will gather information about trends, driving forces, and emerging markets to better understand how their future will likely be different from today. 

In addition, there will be a focused examination of the activities taking place in the venture capital market that will some day have an impact on their markets.  The venture capital market IS the market of the future.  It is a place where companies are currently investing real money in leading edge start-up firms and technologies that will define the future.

Objectives:

The FutureScape Program is designed to…

• Create a forum where a corporate team can spend focused time considering corporate growth opportunities in the 3-5 year
  timeframe.
• Gather existing information on trends and driving forces that are likely to have an impact on the future.
• Identification of, and alignment with senior management on, the most attractive strategic frontier options (Aligning Phase).
• Identify and prioritize a list of corporate strategic frontiers, representing areas of future growth opportunities for senior executives to consider.
• Examine venture capital activity already taking place on the top strategic frontiers.
• Identify the implications of venture capital activity and potential corporate responses.
• Create a roadmap of strategic options for senior leaders to consider in the pursuit of the company’s strategic frontiers.

Deliverables:

1. A prioritized list of strategic frontiers for the organization, areas of potential new growth that are currently beyond the current business model.
2. An analysis of activity in the venture capital market for three of the selected strategic frontiers.
3. A strategic roadmap of recommended actions for developing the strategic frontiers.
